Proper Procedure for
BACKING
Backing a vehicle is not difficult and is an important part of driving.  You will use backing
almost every time you drive.  If you park, either straight in, angle or parallel, you will be
required to back your vehicle.

In some case you will have no choice but to back your vehicle, such as a road that is
blocked or a narrow dead end street.

Follow these instructions and you will learn to back your vehicle safely.

First, make sure your wheels are straight.  Twist your body to the right so that your right
knee is resting against the seat.  Place your right hand behind the passengers seat. Using
your right hard and arm pull yourself toward the back.  This will take the pressure off of
your neck and you can see what is behind you much better.

Check for traffic and make sure that it is safe to back.

Try not to use the accelerator pedal, but allow the vehicle to idle and pull itself backwards.

If you need to adjust the direction your vehicle is going, remember that when you are
backing if you turn your steering wheel to the left, the vehicle will go to the left.  If you turn
your steering wheel to the right, your vehicle will go to the right.

Keep you hand  in the same place on the top of the steering wheel at all times.  If you move
your hand to a different position, you will lose control of the vehicle and it will swerve to the
right or left.  Stay focused.

You are required to back approximately 50 feet which is only about 3 standard car length.

When the examiner tells you to stop, DO NOT LOOK FORWARD UNTIL YOUR VEHICLE IS AT A
COMPLETE STOP.

You could lose 3 points.
